Experience of the Overmind Consciousness

Sri Aurobindo describes the experience of consciousness that occurs with the link to the overmental levels of consciousness. “We are aware of a sealike downpour of masses of a spontaneous knowledge which assumes the nature of Thought but has a different character from the process of thought to which we are accustomed; for there is nothing here of seeking, no trace of mental construction, no labour of speculation or difficult discovery; it is an automatic and spontaneous knowledge from a Higher Mind that seems to be in possession of Truth and not in search of hidden and withheld realities. One observes that this Thought is much more capable than the mind of including at once a mass of knowledge in a single view; it has a cosmic character, not the stamp of an individual thinking.”

If we reflect for a moment on the process of thought as we are used to it, we can see that there is something totally different and more powerful in terms of a thought-process taking place here, and Sri Aurobindo describes this as the stamp of the influx of the overmental gradations of consciousness, which are founded and based in the cosmic and universal Truth, even while they recognize and work out the issues related to the individual process. There are of course other manifestations of the influx of the overmental levels of consciousness which we shall explore in the next segment.

Transitional Gradations of Consciousness Between Mind and Supermind

In his description of the ascent and the potential descent of Knowledge and Power from one of the higher gradations of consciousness, Sri Aurobindo points out that the first steps are not yet at the level of the Supermind, but are in a transitional or intermediate gradation that takes on a power of knowledge no longer based in the Ignorance, but not yet partaking of the full presence and awareness to be found at the supramental level. It is a derivative or filtered luminosity rather than the direct sunlight.

This is “the needed step towards a supramental transformation; for we perceive a graduality of ascent, a communication with a more and more deep and immense light and power from above, a scale of intensities which can be regarded as so many stairs in the ascension of Mind or in a descent into Mind from that which is beyond it.” In other words, we now have a mechanism for a transition of consciousness to occur, a gradation that allows a linking and a relationship that otherwise would not be possible due to the immensity of the distance between Mind and Supermind.
