Matter Need Not Be the Foundation of Manifestation

It is quite normal and natural for us, living in a world based initially on the principle of Matter, to accept and believe that this is the “natural” way things have to happen. Sri Aurobindo reminds us that while this is one particular manifestation, it need not be the only way that a universe can be manifested. We tend to see things from our own perspective and this perspective is oftentimes badly skewed. Until quite recently in human history for instance, it was a “known” fact that the sun revolved around the earth. It was also “known” that the world was flat and an attempt to navigate to the edge risked a danger of falling off the edge. Of course, we now know that these “known” facts were the result of limited knowledge and perspective about the wider manifestation. Similarly, the development of the universe and the principles that actuate the manifestation have been understood, until now, from the basis of our own quite limited viewpoint, and do not take into account the wider perspectives of the Spirit.

“But, given the fact that the infinite Reality is free in the play of its consciousness, it is not bound to involve itself in the nescience of Matter before it can at all manifest. It is possible for it to create just the contrary order of things, a world in which the unity of spiritual being is the matrix and first condition of any formation or action, the Energy at work is a self-aware spiritual existence in movement, and all its names and forms are a self-conscious play of the spiritual unity.”

In fact, Sri Aurobindo describes manifestations that could occur through the initiation of the Life-Will, the Mind, or the Supermind as well. In fact, a manifested universe could be based on any one of the primary seven principles from Sat, Chit, Ananda, through Supermind, and down through Mind, Life or Matter. Each one would take on characteristics and forms native to the inherent power and consciousness of the principle that develops the manifestation.
