I suspect more thought has been focused on the necessity of darkness, incapacity & the inexorable universal law that meets life with death, and light with darkness, than on just about any other subject. We have constructed entire philosophical systems based on the inexorable law of death, and the larger forces which govern the entire world within which we live and act, and which circumscribe our efforts and provide strict limits to what can be done. The solution to this law of Necessity, the action of the dualities, the finality, the limitations that it imposes, is generally considered to be the discovery of the spiritual realm and abandonment of this world and the things of this world.
Sri Aurobindo takes a different approach to the philosophical problem involved and begins by pointing out that this inexorable “law” is only “absolute” within the framework of the Nescience. As long as there is any remainder of the Nescience, there will be some resistance and opposition to the higher light and consciousness. “There is an occult truth behind its negations which only the Supermind with its reconciliation of contraries in the original Reality can take up and so discover the pragmatic solution of the enigma. Only the supramental Force can entirely overcome this difficulty of the fundamental Nescience; for with it enters an opposite and luminous imperative Necessity which underlies all things and is the original and final self-determining truth-force of the self-existent Infinite. This greater luminous spiritual Necessity and its sovereign imperative alone can displace or entirely penetrate, transform into itself and so replace the blind Ananke of the Inconscience.”
It is the replacement of the dark law of necessity, the law of death, the law of limitation, fragmentation, incapacity and suffering, with an as yet unrecognised law of light, of oneness, or unity and of vast unified consciousness, that provides the possibility of the supramental transformation envisioned by Sri Aurobindo.
