The Direct Working of the Spirit Is Required For Integral Self-Perfection

Physical culture, vital training, mental capabilities are all aspects of the growth and development of the human individual, and as such are valuable parts of the evolutionary cycle. Yet these steps continually remain locked within the framework of the outer life and thus, are unable to exert the leverage needed for a complete transformation of the being as called for in the practice of Yoga. As long as we are locked into this framework, we are unable to actually see and effect the kind of radical changes envisioned in the workings of the Divine.

Sri Aurobindo notes: “This direct working effects a conversion of the whole being which is the indispensable condition of our real perfection. To grow into the truth and power of the Spirit and by the direct action of that power to be made a fit channel of its self-expression,–a living of man in the Divine and a divine living of the Spirit in humanity,–will therefore be the principle and the whole object of an integral Yoga of self-perfection.”

Through the intervention of the Spirit the limitations of the mind, life and body can be overcome and the focus and energy redirected into new channels. All the culture of the human instrument can prepare for a higher action, but it cannot achieve the higher action without such an intervention.
