What Is Meant By “A Divine Life in a Divine Body?”

It is important to frame the review by the questions that arise when we consider something as radical as a transformation of human life to “a divine life in a divine body”. What is a divine life? What is a divine body? How do we get from where we are today, with all our limitations, contradictions, fears, instincts, habits and egoistic desires to a new standpoint that takes us beyond all of these limiting factors and makes our life one of knowledge, power, joy, and beauty, in harmony with all other life and the systems and processes of the world we live in? What is the time frame needed to effectuate the changes, and do they occur all at once or in stages over time?

What we can already understand is the impact that Mind is having on Life and Matter. This is itself a radical transformation of the ways that these prior stages can be utilized in support of the goals we set as mental beings. Our ability to look into the atomic structure and alter it, to combine and divide molecules and elements to create new forms, to convert Matter into Energy, to harness various frequencies of the electro-magnetic spectrum and to develop methods to fly through the air, transmit voice and images anywhere in the world wirelessly, to tap into the energy of the sun and convert it to power to utilize in our lives, all represent the mental intervention in Matter. Because of the limitations of the Mind and its vast ranges of ignorance, not all of our changes or interventions can be seen as positive; rather, there are numerous unintended consequences which need to be addressed if we are going to survive. Pollution, climate change, distribution of resources, disharmony based on ideology or differences of opinion, unintended consequences of our attempts to intervene in the world of Matter with chemicals, pharmaceuticals etc. and the failures based on inability to deal with the scope and magnitude of these unintended consequences, all threaten human existence. We are in the midst of the sixth species die-off event on the planet, much of this event caused by our human interactions.

The first thing we can hope and expect from the next stage of evolution is an awareness and consciousness that can see the global and integral implications of our interventions and ensure that we are able to balance and harmonize multiple different needs at one time as we move forward. We need to correct the deficiencies of the mental evolution in order to recreate a stable platform upon which further evolution can occur. From that point forward, however, we can expect a new consciousness to reveal further powers of insight, action and harmony and thereby begin to change the way our bodies function, our lives take place and our minds work as well.

Sri Aurobindo notes: “A divine life in a divine body is the formula of the ideal that we envisage. But what will be the divine body? What will be the nature of this body, its structure, the principle of its activity, the perfection that distinguishes it from the limited and imperfect physicality within which we are now bound? What will be the conditions and operations of its life, still physical in its base upon the earth, by which it can be known as divine? If it is to be the product of an evolution, and it is so that we must envisage it, an evolution out of our human imperfection and ignorance into a greater truth of spirit and nature, by what process or stages can it grow into manifestation or rapidly arrive? The process of the evolution upon earth has been slow and tardy — what principle must intervene if there is to be a transformation, a progressive or sudden change? It is indeed as a result of our evolution that we arrive at the possibility of this transformation. As Nature has evolved beyond Matter and manifested Life, beyond Life and manifested Mind, so she must evolve beyond Mind and manifest a consciousness and power of our existence free from the imperfection and limitation of our mental existence, a supramental or truth-consciousness, and able to develop the power and perfection of the spirit.”
